EU: US Airways, American deal seems poised for liftoff by EC, say sources

Sources say approval by the European Commission is headed towards American Airlines and US Airways as the two companies look to merge into the world’s largest airline. The deal, to be made for about $11 billion, will be cleared by European regulators on the condition that the airlines divest clots on a transatlantic route.

    The airlines had offered to give up slots on a route between London’s Heathrow and Philadelphia. Despite the news by the three, unnamed sources, the Commission is scheduled to officially announce its decision regarding the merger on August 6. A spokesperson for the Commission declined to comment on the matter, as did US Airways. American Airlines’ AMR Corp could not be reached for comment by reporters.
