Asia: Trans-ASEAN antitrust watchdog crucial to secure Chinese, Indian investment
The executive director for the Asian Competition Forum promoted the agenda of a future trans-ASEAN competition regulator in order to secure foreign investors with a streamline antitrust process. Reports say Mark Williams promoted the super-watchdog for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, though acknowledged such a regulator is not in the region’s immediate future. Reports say the association’s largest hurdle will be to balance national competition law and needs with an overall regulator, but attendees of the conference, hosted by the Competition Commission of Pakistan, envisioned the future of the ASEAN member states past 2015; the chairman of the KPPU, Indonesia’s competition regulator, enforced the need for ASEAN nations to explore the idea of a unified regulator as it would be more attractive to foreign investors as opposed to investors forced to deal with multiple, national regulators.
