South Africa: Meat traders in uproar over chicken tariffs

South Africa’s chicken market received backlash over its proposals to increase import tariffs on chickens, say reports. The nation’s meat traders issued a complaint with the Competition Commission against the South African Poultry Association as well as additional, local frozen chicken firms, claiming the tariffs would stifle competition and manipulate prices. The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters confirmed the complaint was sent to the competition watchdog. According to reports, the poultry group claims foreign imports, especially from Brazil and Europe, are leading to job losses in the local industry.
