Netherlands: Authorities strike down mandatory flood insurance

The Netherlands’ Consumer & Market Authorities has dealt a blow to the nation’s insurers and their plans to require flood insurance for every citizen. Reports say the regulator has issued an informal decision that requiring such insurance would be anticompetitive, though it acknowledged the opinion was based on insufficient evidence. The nation’s insurers were hoping to make flood insurance mandatory by 2014 by packing the insurance with home insurance policies.
