Italy: Sky Italia finds crucial support from regulators

Italian broadcasting giant Sky Italia has scored a big win as the nation’s antitrust regulator sided with the company, ruling Sky did not abuse its dominant position through its moves to broadcast major sporting events. Rival RTI, owned by Mediaset group, accused Sky Italia of dominance abuse through its buyout of rights to broadcast the EUFA Champions League tournament from 2012 to 2014, as well as rights to broadcast the World Cup games in 2010 and 2014. The regulator, known as the AGCM, noted that the exclusive rights to broadcast the events resulted from a competitive bidding process; further, it noted that there was insufficient proof to rule that the rights to broadcast the World Cup will harm competition of Sky Italia’s rivals.
