As the International Trade Commission is set to rule on whether Apple Inc. infringed on Samsung data transmission patents, analysts await the decision and expect the ruling to have broader implications for the use of wide-spanning technology patents. According to reports, the ITC was set to announce its decision Friday over whether Korea-based Samsung can block what is described as a crucial smartphone function if Apple is, in fact, found to have infringed on the patent for such function. According to one patent expert, the ruling will be “the most important decision from the ITC dealing with the standard-essential patents to date.” According to Dow Lohnes patent lawyer David Long, the ruling could be remarkable as it would decide the next actions taken if infringement is proven. Samsung claims Apple has infringed on four of its patents – two of which are standard patents – that relate to the transmittance of data between smartphones.
