Italy: Watchdog looks for answers after complaints against state-owned rail company

Italy’s antitrust authority has announced the initiation of an investigation into state-owned rail company Ferrovie dello Stato after receiving complaints from private companies of abuse of dominance. The complaints, issued by rival rail company Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, were filed with regulators between 2012 and this month. Specifically, the antitrust regulator will look at whether FS blocked access to Italy’s rail network infrastructure for its rival, which was first launched in 2012 on the platform of faster service and lower prices for customers. FS is accused of taking actions that barred entry into the high-speed rail services market, and/or limited access to advertising space within major train stations.
