As the European Commission looks towards major overhauls to promote competition across Europe’s telecommunications companies, Commission technology expert Neelie Kroes says telecommunications companies need to avert their attention from consolidation through mergers and acquisitions. In a recent interview, Kroes said to reporters that telecommunications should focus beyond consolidation, highly considered by companies as a requirement to strengthen their financial stance to live-up to upcoming infrastructure requirements; such a consideration is “old thinking,” said Kroes, and that consolidation is just one factor of the process towards becoming a single market. Further, investments may come from elsewhere other than Europe, noting that the head of AT&T in the US has expressed interest in investing in the European telecommunications market.
