New Zealand: Just before hearing, airline wants cartel case dismissed

Just hours before a crucial hearing in the case, Air New Zealand has argued that the Commerce Commission should dismiss a longstanding case against the airliner accused of price-fixing. According to reports, the company issued a statement arguing for the abandonment of the case on the grounds that evidence was retracted under oath, though it did not specify which evidence was retracted, citing confidentiality orders. Air New Zealand is facing a penalty from the competition regulator in the High Court at Auckland in a case lasting nearly five years over allegations the airline fixed prices of freight transport; the airline is the sole remaining party still before the court after more than $35 million in fines has been issued to other airlines who admitted taking part in the scheme.
