US: In latest development of credit card fee case, judge threatens to hold retail groups in contempt

As retail trade groups work to have merchants reject the proposed $7.2 billion settlement made with regulators and Visa and Mastercard concerning the companies’ credit card fees, a federal judge has threatened to hold those retail groups in contempt over the website that urges the settlement proposal’s rejection. The move was dubbed “unusual” by reports. The website, merchantsobject.com, founded by the National Association of Convenience Stores, urges merchants to reject the settlement or opting out to it. US District Judge John Gleeson had suggested earlier this month that the site was misleading as it may lead merchants to believe that accepting the settlement was not an option. The NACS and its supporting trade groups now have a deadline of April 30 to argue why the judge should not order that the site be taken down.
