US: Baer wants caps on spectrum division

Going a step further from remarks made earlier this week, head of the Department of Justice antitrust division William Baer has reportedly backed the proposal of setting caps on how much spectrum individual wireless carriers could hold. If the proposal moves forward, it could prevent AT&T and Verizon, the nation’s two largest carriers, from bidding in future airwaves auctions for certain blocks. The remarks went beyond earlier suggestions made by the DOJ after the Federal Communications Commission had requested ideas on new guidelines for the allocation of the nation’s spectrum. A major auction for the spectrum is scheduled to be held in 2014.
