US: CA senator wants new office to watch gas price-fixing

A senator from California has proposed a new office be established to monitor the fuel industry and prevent price-fixing at gas stations. Senator Mark Leno has reportedly suggested legislation to create the Office of Fuel Price Investigation and Manipulation Prevention. The office would be intended as a forum for public complaint on the issue to monitor and investigate any allegations of price-fixing at the pumps. The office would additionally suggest new ideas to prevent dramatic price-swings in the fuel market that have plagued the state for years. Several groups have expressed support for the idea, including Consumer Action and the Consumer Federation.
