Australia: ACCC gears up for new fights as priorities change

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has offered a strict agenda at the latest International Bar Association conference, held last week. ACCC chairman Rod Sims has informed Australia’s lawyers that the watchdog is currently performing more than 10 cartel probes as the ACCC gears up to prioritizing the fight against cartels. Additionally, Sims suggested that anticompetitive collusion and abuse of market dominance were to be the other main focuses of the ACCC, saying that the abuses are “so detrimental to consumer welfare and the competitive process” that they must be taken care of. Sims also notified the IBA that several of the current cartel investigations are locally confined. The remarks were made at the IBA’s ninth Competition Mid-Year Conference, held in Sydney.
