EU: Cross-boarder paper merger must wait longer for Commission’s decision

The European Commission has announced an extension of its review of a proposed merger between paper companies Ahlstrom and Munksjö. The deal would combine Finland-based Ahlstrom’s Label and Processing business with Sweden-based Munksjö. The Commission first opened a probe into the deal last December. The authority has now extended its review of the deal until June 7, despite Ahlstrom’s suggestion that certain businesses, including some based in Germany, be divested to form their own entity in order to resolve competition concerns. The proposal was submitted last week.
