Canada: Medical lab chains will combine forces, big bills to come for government

The Competition Bureau has announced that it will not take action to block two of British Columbia’s largest private medical chains from merging. LifeLabs plans to guy BC Biomedical, an acquisition that will mean LifeLab will now bill nearly $200 million a year to the government’s Medical Service Plan for state-funded testing. Despite concerns over the merger, the Medical Services Commission has reportedly approved for LifeLabs to run the former BC Biomedical labs. The parties expect to close the deal in April.
