South Korea: FTC okay with handset chip merger, now China to decide

While South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission has given the go-ahead for the nation’s largest handset chip designer MediaTek Inc. to acquire its smaller competitor MStar Semiconductor Inc., Chinese antitrust authorities have yet to decide on the deal. As a result, the companies have stated in filings to the Taiwan Stock Exchange that they are now looking to push the effective date of their merger up to May 1, from the original August 1 date. Previous authoritative concerns in both South Korea and China pushed the first effective date back to May from January 1. The deal was announced last June for an estimated $3.86 billion.
