Kenya: Sports network provider, authorities clash on reselling of content rights

MultiChoice, a South African Pay-Television and Internet provider, has apparently ignored requests from the Communications Commission of Kenya to resell its rights for English Premier League content, arguing that selling those rights will reduce revenue. The provider’s rivals have made similar calls to sell the rights to the sports content. In response, a spokesperson for MultiChoice argued that “Exclusivity is the principle” of the Pay-TV market. The Competition Commission of Kenya, however, has rebutted, arguing that the content-sharing model has already successfully been implemented around Europe, the U.K. and parts of Africa.
