The Australian Consumer and Competition Commission’s spat with Woolworths Ltd has intensified as the ACCC released an assessment of the leading supermarket company’s uncooperative attitude towards new policies to streamline the merger approval process. While the ACCC recently reached an agreement with Coles over the streamline process, which it will implement for a six-month trial period, the regulator says it is “disappointed” that Woolworths and the ACCC have not reached such an agreement. ACCC chairman Rod Sims noted that the disagreement is particularly troubling due to Woolworths’s expected expansion plans.
