U.K.: Parliament introduces new legislation preventing supermarket abuse of farmers
Parliament introduced new legislative efforts on Tuesday that would force supermarkets to pay-up if found to be abusing the farmers from which they buy wholesale products. Ministers want to give a new Groceries Code Adjudicator the power to enforce these fines if inquiries find that supermarkets have forced farmers to decrease wholesale prices at below-cost levels. The move comes in the wake of recent complaints that supermarkets are abusing their dominant power over some farmers by decreasing wholesale prices and adjusting terms of agreements even after deals have been inked. The Adjudicator would now rule on these complaints and fine the supermarkets, though fine levels have not yet been determined.
