The permanent secretary at the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment has said in a speech that bid-rigging “plagues government procurement,” referencing a report done by the OECD into the effects of cartels in markets that supply goods and services to the government. PS Naffie Barry made the remarks at an opening speech of a workshop organized by the Gambia Competition Commission and the Gambia Pubic Procurement Authority. She made special emphasis on the affects of collusion and cartels on the welfare of the citizens of Gambia. The Chairman of the GCC also emphasized the need for specialized training in antitrust issues in the nation, as one-half to two-thirds of government spending is used on the procurement of goods and services.
