E.U.: Commission looks to partially protect agriculture sector from competition law

The European Commission has announced it will enact a “protectionalist’ approach to the agriculture sector. The proposed regulation, to go along with the Common Agricultural Policy 2013, will aim to clarify competition rules and increase farmers’ power within associations and interbanch organizations. The Draft Report offers new reforms to increase emphasis on the production sector of agriculture, which, at present, “lack[s] large entities. The Draft Report also looks towards promoting competition law enforcement against primary producers that is no different than how it is applied within other sectors. The report calls for an exception to competition law “to some extent” within the agriculture industry.
