U.S.: WellPoint one step closer to finalizing $4.46B merger with Amerigroup

The Department of Justice has cleared WellPoint Inc to buy Medicaid insurer Amerigroup Corp. for a planned $4.46 billion as long as Amerigroup sells its Virginia not-for-profit businesses. The deal is still subject to state regulators, however; but if approved, the parties expect to finalize the deal by the end of the year. The DOJ said that if the original plan of the merger had been approved, consumers would have fewer options for Medicaid managed-care plans in northern Virginia, as WellPoint and Amerigroup are the only providers in the area.
