U.K.: Lord Currie has big plans for new antitrust body

Lord Philip Currie, former head of Ofcom, has announced a framework for the newly-created Competition and Markets Authority in efforts to revamp the U.K.’s antitrust regulation and create a “vibrant” and “dynamic” culture within the new body. The shake-up first began last July when the U.K. announced the Office of Fair Trading and the Competition Commission would be consolidated to create the CMA. While the new body does not take effect until April 2014, Lord Currie said in a speech at the Law Society’s Competition Sector Annual Dinner that there is a “great deal” of planning and management ahead in order to make this new entity more efficient and communicative than the current system of having two individual antitrust authorities.
