U.S.: FTC says ‘no’ to PA hospital merger

The Federal Trade Commission has announced it will not allow Reading Hospital System, based in Pennsylvania, to buy Surgical Institute of Reading, citing a threat to competition in the area. The FTC also noted that if the deal were to go through, Reading Hospital System’s dominance in the market may lead to decreased quality in patient care. The deal was agreed upon last May, though the FTC will be filing a complaint in federal district court with the Pennsylvania attorney general, and will also issue an administrative complaint, to determine whether the merger is legal and, ultimately, to block the deal.
