U.S.: Dish gets first approval to jumpstart wireless market competition

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski has announced the Commission’s approval of Dish Network’s proposed plan to create a new wireless service able to compete with market leaders AT&T and Verizon Wireless. The proposal still needs approval from four other commissioners, but Chairman Genachowski’s approval marks the first win in a long-fought battle. According to the FCC, the wireless sector is beginning to resemble a “near duopoly,” and the chairman says that Dish Network’s plan may jumpstart new competition in the market.
