Australia: Potato growers may be approved for collective bargaining

Australia’s antitrust watchdog has formally proposed allowing the South East Potato Growers Association and the Victorian Growers Council to collectively bargain with clients, hoping the permission to do so will allow the continent’s potato growers to have greater power over contracts. Terms of the draft determination would not allow seed potato growers to set a price for their seed, however. SEPGA represents 17 potato growers, and VPGC represents 290. The collective bargaining permission would give immunity to the potato growers over a practice that would normally be cause for concern by the ACCC.
