Italy: Alitalia surrenders monopoly on Rome-Milan route to competition

EasyJet scored a victory in Italy as the nation’s competition authority has ruled flagship airline Alitalia must surrender seven of its monopoly Rome-Milan routes to the low-budget flyer. Alitalia obtained the routes in an effort to pay back more 300 million euros in government loans when an ad hoc legislative decree amended already-suspended antitrust laws four years ago. The competition authority ruled after an investigated initiated last April that the monopoly causes a “lack of proper competition” in justification of its decision.
