AGCM threatens Apple with additional fines and closure of operations

    The Italian competition authority, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), has threatened Apple with additional fines and a 30-day closure of its operations for non-compliance. The AGCM had fined Apple €900,000 ($1.2 million) in December 2011 for failing to provide a two-year warranty as required by EU consumer law. Instead, Apple had misled its customers by encouraging them to opt for the one-year AppleCare warranty program.

    If Apple does not comply with the AGCM’s order to inform customers about the two-year warranty, the watchdog will tack on an additional €300,000 ($377,500) to Apple’s fines.
