SARIA and Danish Crown’s joint acquisition of animal byproduct company approved

The European Commission has approved the acquisition of joint control over Daka Denmark by SARIA Bio-Industries and Danish Crown. Daka Denmark will take over the business activity of Daka a.m.b.a., a Danish cooperative, and will be active in animal byproduct manufacturing. SARIA is a German company that recycles animal and agricultural byproducts and creates products for human and animal consumption. Danish Crown is the largest slaughterhouse in Denmark.

    The Commission examined both horizontal and vertical competition concerns raised by the deal. Horizontal concerns were allayed by the fact that SARIA and Danish Crown operate in different member states, and by the number of competitors in the overlap market. The vertical links created by the acquisition do not lead to competition concerns because Danish Crown already supplies most of its animal byproducts to Daka, and SARIA is not involved in slaughtering.
