Deutsche Bahn’s electricity pricing probed as possible abuse of dominance

The European Commission has opened formal antitrust proceedings against Deutsche Bahn. The Commission seeks to determine if the railway’s discounts offered for traction current in Germany lead to higher prices for Deutsche Bahn rivals, thus constituting an abuse of dominance. DB Energie, a Deutsche Bahn subsidiary, is Germany’s only supplier of traction current. Traction current is a type of electricity that is “needed to move electric locomotives and trains on the railway network.”
