New York City’s Department of Consumer Affairs is cracking down on gender-based price discrimination for grooming services. Salons have been charging men more for manicures, haircuts, and waxing: 103 of 138 shops have been issued gender-pricing violations this year. The department’s commissioner, Jonathan Mintz, says that there was a focused sweep to target this practice, with a special focus on salons, barbershops, laundry, and dry cleaning. In justifying the price differences, salons argue that services for men–whether waxes or manicures–require more work.
