The European Commission has authorized the extension of a French tax credit scheme to facilitate the creation of video games that promote culture. The scheme is approved through December 2017.
The tax credit was first approved in 2007. It is for 20 percent of expenditure on the design and creation of video games with cultural content, and is capped at €3 million per business per year. The credit is available to video game manufacturers that are permanently established in France. The estimated budget of the scheme is €45 million a year.
There are two criteria to determine if video games are cultural products, thus qualifying for the tax credit. The video game must either be an adaptation of an existing work of European origin, or it must satisfy a test of quality and originality that contributes to the expression of European culture.
