Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has announced its intention to detect and label images generated by artificial intelligence (AI) services provided by other companies. The move aims to address concerns about the spread of potentially misleading or deceptive content on its platforms.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, revealed that the company will implement a system of invisible markers embedded within image files. These markers will enable Meta to identify and label images that have been generated by AI technologies, distinguishing them from authentic photographs.
Clegg explained in a blog post that the labeling initiative seeks to inform users about the nature of the content they encounter on Meta’s platforms. Many AI-generated images closely resemble real photos, making it difficult for users to discern their authenticity. By applying labels to such content, Meta aims to provide transparency and increase awareness among its users.

While Meta already labels content generated using its own AI tools, the company is now extending this practice to images created on services operated by other tech giants. These include OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, Shutterstock, and Alphabet’s Google.
The decision reflects Meta’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by generative AI technologies, which have the ability to produce fake yet highly realistic content based on simple prompts. By collaborating with other industry players and implementing standardized labeling procedures, Meta hopes to mitigate the potential harms associated with the proliferation of AI-generated content across its platforms.
The announcement by Meta provides an early glimpse into the evolving landscape of technological standards aimed at safeguarding against the dissemination of deceptive content online. As concerns surrounding the impact of AI continue to grow, tech companies are increasingly taking proactive measures to ensure the responsible use of AI technologies and protect users from misinformation.
