The firm’s new initiative will be led by Michael Kades, an attorney with experience in antitrust enforcement, including a recent role as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. According to a statement released by the firm, Kades brings with him experience in oversight of civil enforcement matters involving companies such as Apple, Visa, and American Airlines.

Joining Kades in the new practice are Attorney Jeff Dan Herrera, former chief of New Mexico’s Antitrust Bureau, and Senior Attorney Brian Moore, who previously served both the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office and the City of Albuquerque. Moore also plays a key role in the firm’s existing public entity litigation group.

Per a statement from the firm, the newly launched antitrust division is designed to empower state, local, regional, and tribal governments to pursue enforcement actions against corporations that undermine competitive markets. The firm emphasized that the team’s collective experience across all levels of government gives them a unique perspective on the enforcement needs and challenges faced by public entities.

The initiative complements Nachawati’s established Public Entity Litigation Division, which represents a range of governmental clients in consumer protection, data privacy, and related areas. According to the firm, the integration of antitrust services provides a more comprehensive legal solution for public clients seeking to safeguard market fairness and consumer interests.

Kades noted that the group’s approach is rooted in firsthand understanding of the public enforcement landscape. “This practice is built for government enforcers, by government enforcers,” he said in a statement. He emphasized the team’s goal of serving as a “force multiplier” to help governmental clients across the country take meaningful action against anticompetitive conduct.

Before joining Nachawati Law Group, Kades also held prominent roles outside of the DOJ, including as director for markets and competition policy at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth. He previously served as antitrust counsel to Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and spent two decades as an attorney at the Federal Trade Commission.

According to a statement from founding partner Majed Nachawati, the new antitrust practice reflects the firm’s ongoing commitment to fighting corporate misconduct and reinforcing fair competition.
