Ex-Baker McKenzie Partner Launches Austrian Antitrust Boutique

Andreas Traugott, the former head of Baker McKenzie’s competition practice in Austria, has departed the global law firm to establish a new boutique specializing in antitrust and regulatory law. According to Law.com, Traugott has teamed up with Baker McKenzie counsel Anita Lukaschek and independent lawyer Peter Thyri, with all three serving as partners in the new firm.

    The newly formed practice, named Thyri Traugott Lukaschek Rechtsanwälte, will focus on competition law, litigation, and regulatory matters. Per Law.com, Traugott has been a partner since 2009, with prior experience at DLA Piper, where he built expertise in EU and Austrian competition law as well as state aid. Thyri brings his own track record as a founder of an independent practice in 2012, following positions at Wolf Theiss and Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Lukaschek, meanwhile, previously served as a senior expert at the Austrian Federal Competition Authority before joining Baker McKenzie.

    In discussing the new venture, Traugott emphasized that Austria’s legal market was ripe for a specialist boutique. “It’s about the correct niche—in the right jurisdictions like the U.K. and Germany you have great boutiques with a lot of business and Austria didn’t have that, even though there is quite a big market for it,” he said. He added that while the team will no longer have access to Baker McKenzie’s global network, the streamlined structure of a boutique can sometimes serve clients more efficiently than larger firms.

    Baker McKenzie Austria managing partner Alexander Petsche expressed his gratitude to both Traugott and Lukaschek for their work with the firm and wished them success in their new endeavor.
