President Trump Warns Trade Deals Could Be Unraveled if Tariff Case Lost

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States may have to roll back recently signed trade agreements with some of its key partners if the Supreme Court upholds a ruling declaring many of his tariffs unlawful. The warning came during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, according to Reuters.

    The administration is appealing a decision from a U.S. appeals court that found Trump’s broad use of tariffs violated trade laws. Trump told reporters that a loss in the Supreme Court would risk undoing agreements made with the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and others, per Reuters. He stressed that while he believed his administration would prevail, defeat could leave the United States “far poorer.”

    Trump defended his tariff strategy, saying it was central to securing deals that had already been finalized and others still under negotiation. “Our country has a chance to be unbelievably rich again. It could also be unbelievably poor again. If we don’t win that case, our country is going to suffer so greatly, so greatly,” he said.

    He added that the EU had already agreed to terms that he characterized as highly favorable to the United States. “We made a deal with the European Union where they’re paying us almost a trillion dollars, and you know what? They’re happy. It’s done. These deals are all done,” Trump said. “I guess we’d have to unwind them.”

    The remarks marked Trump’s first suggestion that ongoing trade agreements could collapse if the Supreme Court lets the lower court’s ruling stand, according to Reuters.
