According to Reuters, the case centered on contractual arrangements that limited the ability of mobile device manufacturers to develop and distribute smartphones and other devices using operating systems that compete with Android. As part of the resolution, Google agreed to lift restrictions that had tied manufacturers more closely to its operating system, giving them greater flexibility in their product strategies.

The Mexican competition authority said the measures align with steps taken by regulators in other countries that have scrutinized Google’s Android contracts. Per Reuters, those international precedents influenced the remedies accepted in Mexico, reflecting a broader global effort to address competition concerns in digital markets.

With the new commitments in place, device makers operating in Mexico are expected to have more freedom to design and sell products running on alternative operating systems. The commission indicated that this could lower costs associated with developing different technological configurations and increase the range of options available to consumers.

Software developers are also likely to benefit from the changes. According to Reuters, the authority said a more open mobile ecosystem could foster innovation by making it easier for developers to introduce new applications and services without being constrained by restrictive platform rules.

The antitrust commission added that it will actively monitor Google’s compliance with the commitments and continue using its regulatory powers to examine conduct in digital markets. Per Reuters, the agency emphasized that protecting consumer choice and preventing practices that limit competition will remain a priority as technology markets continue to evolve.
