The incoming team is led by Philip Iovieno and includes Nicholas Gravante, Sean O’Shea, Michael Petrella and Matthew Karlan. According to a statement from Mintz, the additions are intended to bolster the firm’s capabilities in high-stakes disputes and regulatory matters.

Iovieno will take on the role of co-chair of Mintz’s antitrust practice. He and Gravante previously held leadership roles at Cadwalader, where Gravante co-led the litigation practice. Both partners resigned from Cadwalader earlier this month in order to avoid potential conflicts of interest with clients tied to the firm’s planned merger partner, Hogan Lovells, according to Bloomberg Law.

Per statement, the group brings experience spanning complex commercial disputes, mergers and acquisitions and governance litigation, securities cases, civil RICO claims, white-collar defense, internal investigations and financial-sector litigation involving banks and other institutions.

Seth Goldman, chair of Mintz’s antitrust, employment and litigation division, said in a statement that the team is “widely recognised as one of the most formidable litigation teams in New York.” He added that their arrival strengthens the firm’s ability to respond to increasing demand for sophisticated antitrust and financial litigation services and enhances its presence in New York and nationwide.

Iovieno and Gravante joined Cadwalader in 2020 from Boies Schiller Flexner. At that firm, Gravante had served as co-managing partner. At Cadwalader, Iovieno also co-headed the antitrust litigation group and represented clients including Kraft Heinz, McDonald’s and DuPont. Gravante led the firm’s commercial litigation practice and handled a range of high-profile matters.

His recent work included representing former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg in connection with tax fraud charges. Gravante also secured the dismissal of a civil lawsuit brought by a former business partner against Hunter Biden and James Biden, alleging complex financial fraud.

O’Shea and Petrella had also previously worked at Boies Schiller, joining Cadwalader in 2019. At the time, Cadwalader said their arrival would enhance its trial representation of financial institutions as well as corporate and funds clients, according to a statement. O’Shea served as chair of the firm’s trial practice group.

According to a statement from Mintz, the collective experience of the group is expected to deepen the firm’s bench in complex and high-profile litigation matters, particularly in New York’s competitive legal market.
