French car firms Renault and Peugeot-Citroen, iconic brands with a long history in Argentina’s small and luxury car markets, have both announced their plans to jump into the Pick-up truck segment, both in Argentina and throughout the region. Argentina’s pick-up fever is still going strong, with Toyota’s ‘Hilux’ being the country’s top seller. Similar offers from Volkswagen’s ‘Amarok’ and Ford’s ‘Ranger’ have similarly impressive sales, ranking as 8th and 14th best selling cars in 2016 so far.
Renault will introduce the’ Alaskan’ truck in Argentina’s market, facing national competitors head on. The car will be assembled in Renault’s Santa Isabel factory starting in 2018, some time after Renault brings in production of the Nissan ‘Frontier.’ Renault however will plunge ahead in the sales segment, selling Mexican-made ‘Alaskan’ vehicles starting next year.
Peugeot’s, on the other hand, is further behind in its plans for the pick-up market. “The pick-up market in Latin America is for close to 700,000 units a year, almost 75% of the Sports Utility segment. We need a good pick-up to secure our growth potential in the region” said PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s representatives.
