Armenia: Competition regulators get tough on market consolidation

 |  February 23, 2014

Armenian competition regulators announced plans to toughen their stance against market consolidation among the nation’s largest companies, say reports.

The nation’s Commission for Protection of Economic Competition announced at a press conference that such mergers will be top priority this year.

According to the regulator’s head, Artak Shaboyan, “if large companies acquire major shares in other organizations or merge, we will scrutinize things, and if we find that consolidation affects market competition, we’ll prohibit such consolidations.”

The regulator appears to be keeping its word as major supermarket chains, including Evrika and SAS, are currently under watch by authorities for market dominance.
