Australia: ACCC to rule on Quantas/Emirates bid by Christmas

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has announced the authority will rule on a decision regarding a proposed merger between Quantas and Emirates airlines by December 20. ACCC chairman Rod Sims said that officials are working on a “long” draft decision and that an early release of their decision was not likely. If the deal were to go through, Quantas would re-route most of its traffic to Europe through Dubai; Quantas has expressed desperation for the merger to be approved. Competitor Virgin Australia has said that the deal would be anticompetitive.
