Australia: Whistleblowers are crucial says ACCC

Laundry detergents and cardboard boxes might seem like innocuous products, but they have formed the basis of some of Australia’s largest cartel investigations.

In both these Federal Court cases run by the competition regulator, whistleblowers have been crucial, says Australian Competition and Consumer Commission commissioner Sarah Court.

Ms Court, who oversees the ACCC’s enforcement and litigation program, says the ACCC’s power to grant conditional immunity to whistleblowers helps to shine a light in dark places.

“The immunity policy and the ability of whistleblowers to come forward and get complete protection under this policy is just completely fundamental to our ability to detect what is otherwise covert and hidden conduct which is very hard for authorities to detect.”
