Austria: The intertwining M&A activity of Austria’s mobile telecom sector

In a conflict between state and European authorities, Austria’s Competition Authority is reportedly still “skeptical” of Hutchinson Austria’s bid to buy Orange Austria, despite the European Commission’s approval of the deal last week (on conditional accounts, including the deal that Hutchinson Austria offers part of its frequencies to MVNO to eventually be sold to another operator). Already reportedly against Telekom Austria’s acquisition of Orange’s “Yesss!”, the Competition Authority’s final decision is said to directly affect whether Hutchinson will win its deal to buy Orange, a thought reinforced by Hutchinson as well. If all deals are to go through, Hutchinson would be the market’s third-ranking power, with Telekom Austria remaining at the top.
