Brazil Names New Antitrust Head

 |  July 1, 2021

President Jair Bolsonaro appointed the current general superintendent of Cade (Administrative Council for Economic Defense), Alexandre Cordeiro Macedo the new president of the body.

If the name is approved by the Senate, he will replace Alexandre Barreto, whose 4-year term ended on May 21. Currently, Cordeiro is Cade’s superintendent.

There was a movement to appoint him to command of the agency since last week. He is linked to the president of the PP, senator Ciro Nogueira (PI).

The congressman is one of the leaders of the Centrão, a group of non-ideologically colored parties that supports the government. Cade is responsible for analyzing and judging acts of companies that may pose a risk to competition, such as mergers and acquisitions. It has about 200 employees with public examinations.
