Brazil: New watchdog established to fight price-fixing during World Cup

As Brazil readies for the 2014 World Cup, reports say the government has established a committee to oversee price hikes for hotels and air fares during the month-long tournament in efforts to fight price manipulation.

    The committee, made up of various members of government ministries, was established by President Dilma Rousseff after consumer advocates complained of major price spikes. Brazil’s tourism board conducted a study that found hotel rates will rise 500 percent during the World Cup.

    The government also said it would enlist the help of competition watchdog CADE to analyze hotel and air travel markets and identify areas that may negatively harm competition during the World Cup.
