Canada: Auction aims for 4th wireless competitor

Canada is looking to introduce a fourth wireless competitor when it launches a wireless spectrum auction next year, according to reports.

Industry Minister James Moore told reporters that most of the spectrum up for grabs will be set aside for the nation’s newer, smaller wireless operators that have only been in operation for a few years. The goal is to have one of those new players emerge as a new rival to the nation’s current three leading operators.

While the exact timetable of the auction has yet to be determined, Canadian officials are expected to announce more details on the tender in the coming weeks. The government told reporters that it is not yet sure of how much it expects to raise through the auction.
