Canada: Avis rental car firm under Competition Bureau scope

 |  October 31, 2013

Canada’s Competition Bureau is putting pressure on budget rental car company Avis over allegations of anticompetitive pricing, say reports.

The Bureau is looking into whether Avis Budget Group is falsely advertising “that the price a consumer need to pay to rent a passenger car is the price that Avis/Budget initially represents to consumers.” This would be misleading, the authority said, because the company charges fees not disclosed to consumers.

Further, the Bureau is accusing the company of falsely claiming the fees are imposed on consumers by a third party instead of the business itself.

The charges have not been put before the Competition Tribunal.
