On Tuesday, March 5, Navdeep Bains, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development, announced that Matthew Boswell has been appointed Commissioner of Competition for a five-year term.
Mr. Boswell has been serving as interim Commissioner of Competition since May 30, 2018. He joined the Competition Bureau in 2011 and became Senior Deputy Commissioner the following year. Prior to joining the Bureau, Mr. Boswell was Senior Litigation Counsel in the Enforcement Branch at the Ontario Securities Commission, where he primarily prosecuted securities fraud and related matters. He has also worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto, prosecuting all types of criminal offenses.
The Bureau underwent a restructuring initiative in 2015 to improve its ability to ensure that Canadian businesses and consumers prosper in a competitive and innovative marketplace.
Minister Bains stated, “I congratulate Matthew Boswell on his appointment. Mr. Boswell has the important role of leading a team working hard to promote and defend an open and fair marketplace for all Canadians. I know that he will continue to serve with the same dedication he has demonstrated these past nine month as interim commissioner.”
