Canada: Toronto Real Estate Board appeals Competition Tribunal’s ruling

 |  July 11, 2016

The Toronto Real Estate Board is appealing a ruling by the Competition Tribunal that could allow the board’s realtor members to post sales data online.

The real estate board says the tribunal “erred in fact and law” when it ruled that TREB’s practices lessened competition.

The board’s policy prevented realtors from posting sold data from its Multiple Listing Service online.

TREB says it supports competition among its 45,000 realtor members but the policy was intended to protect the privacy of consumers’ personal financial information.

The board has applied for a stay that would postpone the Aug. 3 deadline for complying with the tribunal’s order until the appeal is resolved.

TREB says it filed its appeal with the Federal Court on Friday.
