Canada: Wireless roaming charges now on the Bureau’s chopping block

Canada’s Competition Bureau is calling on telco regulators to crack down on wireless roaming fees as authorities proceed with the second of three planned hearings on the state of the nation’s telecommunications sector, according to reports.

The Bureau urged the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to do more than simply cut wholesale roaming fees to protect competition in the industry. Reports say that wholesale market is considered the “backbone” of the nation’s mobile market.

While the Bureau acknowledged that a new wireless operator would provide much-needed competition, reports say it added that the CRTC must consider regulation to lower or perhaps cap wholesale wireless roaming rates.
